While you are changing diapers and soothing a crying baby, here are a few simple postpartum dos and don'ts to keep in mind.

Do Eat Right and Drink Plenty of Fluids

The need for breastfeeding, coupled with the need to regain your strength and ensure you have the energy to care for yourself and your baby, means you must eat the right foods and consume plenty of fluids. Getting enough protein is key to helping your body recover from childbirth and ensures your growing baby gets the nutrition they need through your breastmilk.

Beans, eggs, lean meats, soy-based products, and seafood are all great sources of proteins for new moms. Make sure to also consume plenty of calcium-rich foods, including dairy products, such as cheese, yogurt, and milk, broccoli, and soy-based products because they will all help ensure you get the calcium you need. Avoid caffeine and alcohol and instead, drink plenty of water, sugar-free drinks, and milk.

Don't Ignore Your Vaginal Soreness and Overall Health

Caring for your vagina, if you had a vaginal birth, is critical to ensure you heal properly. Soothe your vagina by utilizing a sitz bath and using lidocaine spray periodically or after using the bathroom. Wear loose-fitting, breathable underwear and bottoms. Don't be afraid to use pain-relieving medications. If you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor which medications are the best option for you.

You will likely experience bleeding for several days after giving birth. If the soreness, bleeding, or a strange discharge continues for several weeks after giving birth, talk to your doctor.

Do Watch for Signs of Postpartum Depression

Finally, although it is very normal for new mothers to experience the baby blues in the days following childbirth, you should know the difference between this condition and postpartum depression. Postpartum depression can occur anytime in the first year after childbirth and typically exhibits several symptoms, such as changes in sleep patterns, uncontrollable crying, extreme irritability, lack of interest in the new baby, friends, and family, and lack of motivation.
